Thomas Dawtrey of Petworth, Sussex and Doddinghurst, Essex (Born 1652)

8th Great Grandfather – FFFMFFMFMF1

Sarah Dawtrey, Edward Luther’s wife and my 7th great grandmother was the daughter of Thomas Dawtrey.

Thomas Dawtrey was born in 1652 to William and Amy(nee Strutt) Dawtrey and baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Hadleigh in Suffolk on 7th February 16522. While the Dawtrey family was from Petworth in Sussex, Thomas’s mother Amy’s family were from Hadleigh in Suffolk, and many of his siblings were baptised in Hadleigh. Thomas was educated at St John’s College, Oxford, maticulating on 2nd April 16693

Thomas married Sarah Bright at St Martin Outwich in the City of London on 28th November 16774. Sarah’s family were also from Suffolk, the Bright’s having originated in Bury St Edmunds.

Thomas and Sarah apparently settled in Doddinghurst, Essex as both their children were baptised there, William the eldest on 8th November 16785 and Sarah my 7th great grandmother on 14th May 16806.

On 28th November 1681 Thomas was appointed High Sheriff of Essex7. The term of a High Sheriff was typically for one year and he was replaced the following year by Sir William Glascocke.

Thomas is recorded as voting in the elections of 17028, 17059, 171510 and 172211. In 1705 he votes in Petworth, Sussex the ancestral home of the Dawtrey family but in all the other elections he votes in Doddinghurst.

Thomas died on 6th October 1732 and was buried on 11th October 173212 at St Mary, Petworth in the Dawtrey family vault in the chancel of the church. In his will13 he leaves most of his Estate to his son William, but, while he leaves it up to his son’s discretion, he makes clear his wish that if his son William dies without any issue then the estate should be divided between his two grandsons, Richard Luther and William Luther children of his daughter Sarah and her husband Edward Luther.

In his will14, his son William leaves the Estate to Richard Luther, William having died without issue.

I have not been able to find any reference to the death of Thomas’s wife Sarah, but she must have died before he wrote his will.
