7th Great Grandfather – FFFMFFMF1

Richard Luther my 6th great grandfather’s father was Edward Luther.

Edward Luther was born on 21st December 1669 and baptised at St. Nicholas, Kelvedon Hatch in Essex on 283th December 16692. His parents were Richard and Rebecca (nee Rudge) Luther

Figure 2: Marriage Register Entry for Edward Luther and Sarah Dawtrey

The first reference I have found to Edward was his marriage to Sarah Dawtrey, daughter of Thomas and Ann Dawtrey, in the neighbouring parish of Doddinghurst on 1st December 16983. Doddinghurst was one of the homes of the Dawtrey family, who were originally from Petworth in Sussex.

Not long after he married Edward became one of the Sheriffs of Essex4, although Burke claims that he was High Sheriff of Essex5.

Edward had 4 children, all of whom were born over a period of under 5 years. They all survived to adulthood, which was quite rare for the time, even among the wealthier classes. The first to be baptised was Rebecca on 10th December 16996. Next was my 6th great grandfather Richard, who was baptised on 23”6rd^ February 1700/017, William was baptised on 9th April 17028 and Amy on 5th September 17039.

Edward, as a man of property was able to vote in Parliamentary elections in the 18th century. For example in the election held on 31st May 1715, he voted in Kelvedon Hatch and was recorded as voting for Robert Honywood who lost the election to Robert Honywood10. In the 1722 election he voted for William Harvey and Robert Honywood who were both elected11.

Edward died in 1734 and was buried on the 4th February 173412. I have not been able to find a reference to the burial of Sarah. I also haven’t found a will for Edward so he probably died Intestate.
