Richard Luther of Kelvedon Hatch (Born 1626)

8th Great Grandfather – FFFMFFMFFF1

Edward Luther my 7th great grandfather's father was Richard Luther..

Richard Luther was born in 1626/27 and baptised at St. Nicholas, Kelvedon Hatch in Essex on 8th April 16272. His parents were Anthony and Jane (nee Armstrong) Luther. He was part of a large family of at least 10 children, but many of his siblings died in infancy or childhood.

He was educated at Cambridge University being admitted to Queen’s College on 20th September 1644. and on 31st October 1646 he was admitted to the Middle Temple3. Richard along with his younger brother Gilbert was mentioned in both the 16344 and 16645 Visitations of Essex.

Richard married Rebecca Rudge on 21st September 16476. Rebecca was the daughter of Edward Rudge a London alderman. On the same day, Richard’s younger sister Jane married Edward Rudge, Rebecca’s older brother.

Richard and Rebecca had 7 children although only his two youngest children Jane and Edward outlived him.

Richard died in 1688 and was buried in Kelvedon Hatch on 13th June 16887. In his will, he left some property to his wife Rebecca, but most of his property he left to his son Edward, As his son was not 21 years old he appointed his wife Rebecca, Thomas Luther Esquire, who was a second or third cousin and Edward Rudge, his brother-in-law, as Trustees8. I haven’t been able to find any reference to the death of Rebecca, but she was obviously still alive when Richard wrote his will.
