John Sutton of Winterbourne Gunner (born 1691)

John Sutton was the son of John and Jane Sutton. He was baptised on 13^th April 1691 at Winterbourne Gunner².

On 8^th July 1719, John married Mary Bundy in Nether Wallop³, just over the Hampshire border about 6 miles from Winterbourne Gunner. I believe that, Mary was part of the family of Bundy’s that lived in Winterslow, Wiltshire, a village about half-way between Nether Wallop and Winterbourne Gunner, but I have not been able to prove this.

There is a record of a Mary Bundy’s baptism on 4^th April 1688⁴, daughter of Martin and Ann Bundy. She would be about the right age, but in her father Martin’s will⁵, she is referred to as Mary Rose. The only other Mary Bundy in the registers of Winterslow at that time is the wife of William Bundy, who was Martin’s oldest son. She is referenced in 1706 when they have a child, also William baptised on 22^nd November 1706⁶. William the elder, apparently dies soon after, so it is possible that it is William’s widow Mary who marries John Sutton. If so it would explain why William the younger was buried in Winterbourne Gunner on 25^th October 1743⁷ ie. near his mother. Even if this theory is correct I have not been able to find a reference to William and Mary’s marriage so I do not know this Mary Bundy’s maiden name, so for now at least Mary’s ancestry remains a mystery.

John and Mary had two children, Jane, the eldest who was baptised on 8^th May 1720⁸, and John my 6^th great grandfather who was baptised on 10^th July 1723⁹.

John was a Carpenter. He died in 1754. I have not been able to find a record of his burial, but he made his will on 26^th August that year and the will was proved on 22^nd October¹⁰. In his will he left his estate to his son John with some legacies to his daughter Jane Rose and his granddaughters Mary and Ann Rose and Sarah Sutton, my 5^th great grandmother.

John’s wife Mary had died 12 years earlier and was buried on the 13^th August 1742¹¹.
