John Sutton of Winterbourne Gunner (born 1660)

8th Great Grandfather – FFFMFMMFFF1

Although I have not found any baptism record for John Sutton, I am fairly confident that he was the son of Thomas Sutton.

That a Thomas Sutton was living in Winterbourne Dauntsey during the 1660’s is clear as seen by the baptism of three other children between 1667 and 16722,3,4. Although two different mothers are mentioned in the register, I believe that Elizabeth would have been the mother of John, and Thomas remarried in about 1670 to Margaret. There is a large gap in the records between 1653 and 1662, which is not unusual during the period of the Commonwealth, so other children could have been born at that time.

Thomas died in 1682. He died intestate so there is no will, but in the application of administration of his estate Margaret Sutton, the widow, and Thomas Sutton, presumably the eldest son born before 1661, as only adults above the age of majority which was 21 could witness legal documents, applied for administration5. When, this Thomas dies he gives some bequests to his brother John and his children6.

John married Jeane Carter on 8th April 16877 at Winterbourne Dauntsey

John and Jeane (or Jane) had 4 children, who were all still alive in 1710 when their uncle Thomas left them legacies in his will. All the children were baptised in Winterbourne Gunner, Susannah the eldest on 1st February 1687/88, John my 7th great grandfather on 13th April 16919, Jane on 29th January 169510 and Thomas, the youngest on 7th June 170311

I have not been able to find any reference to when Jane died, but according to the Inventory attached to John’s will he died on 10th July 172612 and was buried two days later in Winterbourne Gunner13. As he does not mention either his wife or his two daughters they must have pre-deceased him. He leaves everything to his two sons with a couple of bequests to his grandchildren.
