Figure 1: Baptism Register Entry for John Sutton

John married Hannah Andrews on 25th June 17473. I believe that Hannah was the daughter of Joshua and Martha Andrews and she was baptised in Downton, a parish about 4 miles south of Winterbourne Gunner, as I have found a baptism record for a Hannah Andrews, the daughter of Joshua and Martha Andrews.

While the record is only found in a Baptism Index and I could not find the original entry in the Downton Parish Register, I do have some corroborative evidence. In John and Hannah’s daughter Sarah’s first marriage registration4, one of the witnesses was David Andrews, and a David Andrews was baptised in Winterbourne Dauntset on 17th June 1736 the son of Joshua and Martha Andrews5, which would make him Hannah’s brother, and Sarah’s uncle. The most conclusive evidence is that in Joshua Andrew’s will he mentions his daughter, Hannah Sutton6.

John and Hannah had 4 children, 3 sons and one daughter, Sarah my 5th great grandmother. The children were all baptised at St Mary, Winterbourne Gunner and three of them at least survived to adulthood. Sarah the eldest was baptised in 1748, the date is not specified although her birth date is - 6^th August 17487. John was baptised on 27th December 17508, Thomas on 6th November 17559 and Stephen on 23rd November 176310

Sarah, John and Thomas all survived to adulthood and were married. Sarah was married twice, first on 6th August 1768 to William Young11, and secondly to my 5th great grandfather John Watts on 1st November 177512. John was married to Mary Toomer at St Thomas, Salisbury on 31st July 177613 and Thomas was married to Elizabeth Hayes at Winterbourne on 9th June 177914

Hannah died in 1778 and was buried on 7th December at Winterbourne Gunner15, while John lived a further 12 years being buried on 10th June 1790 also at Winterbourne Gunner16

In his will, dated 22nd December 178817, he leaves most of his estate to his younger son Thomas, rather than his eldest son John, with a small legacy to his daughter Sarah.
