9th Great Grandfather – FFFMFFMFFFF1

Richard Luther my 8th great grandfather’s father was Anthony Luther.

Anthony Luther was baptised on the 16th March 1587 in Kelvedon Hatch. His parents were Richard and Mary (nee Meade) Luther2.

Anthony was educated at Cambridge University, where he matriculated Easter 1606 as a member of Christ’s College3 at the same time as his younger brother Thomas. Anthony had already been admitted to the Middle Temple in London on 2nd August 16034. Anthony was called to the bar on 18 July 1614.

On 24th February 1622 in Lambourn, Berkshire5 Anthony married Jane Armstrong, the daughter of Gilbert Armstrong of Nottinghamshire6.

Anthony and Jane had quite a lot of children although only 4 survived to adulthood. Of those that survived to adulthood, Richard my 8th great grandfather was baptised on 8th April 16277, Gilbert was baptised on 15th September 16308, Jane was baptised on 5th April 16339 and Mary was baptised 3rd November 163610.

Jane died in 1640 and was buried in Kelvedon Hatch on 12th June 164011. Sometime after Anthony married again to Bridget Sadler, daughter of John Sadler of Wiltshire, but she died on 28th September 164912 and was buried at Kelvedon Hatch on 2nd October 164913

Anthony married a third time to Lady Anne Montague on 6th November 1651 at St Dunstan in the West in London

Both the 1634 Visitation of Essex14 and the 1664 Visition15 refer to Anthony as a Justice of the Peace, and the 1634 Visitation refers to him as a barrister of the Middle Temple. The National Archives, The Essex Archives and the British History Online wesbite, between them have a lot of referencese to legal cases featuring an Anthony Luther, during the first half of the 17th century.

However, as his uncle Anthony Luther was also a barrister of the Middle Temple it is impossible to tell which Anthony is involved. However, his uncle died in 1627, so cases after that must involve the younger Anthony. For example, a case held on the 28th April 1655, mentions that Anthony Luther was the Justice16.

Anthony appears to have sided with the Parliamentary cause duering the English Civil war. During the Civil War when Parliament is raising money for its Army it passes a number of Ordinances, and Anthony Luther is often mentioned as one of the Commissioners for the County of Essex whose job it is to raise the money from the residents of Essex17,18,19.

However, he was also made a Commissioner for the raising of money once King Charles II had been restored to the throne20.

Anthony died on 7th October 1665 and was buried at St Nicholas, Kelvedon Hatch on 10th October 166521. In his will Anthony leaves the bulk of his Estate to his eldest son Richard with smaller legacies to his son Gilbert and his daughters Jane and Mary.
